1. The exclusive Museum not to be missed

Most international visitors come to Turin for the Egyptian Museum, the Cinema Museum or to visit Turin’s magnificent Royal Palaces.
Few travellers step inside the Museo Nazionale del Risorgimento Italiano. That feels surprising once you visit it. Here you discover the story of how Italy became Italy
Italian visitors know it well, while foreign travellers usually overlook it. This makes the experience even better.
You walk through quiet galleries instead of crowded halls. You take your time. Absorb the atmosphere.
If you want authentic experiences in Turin beyond the usual tourist trail, this museum should be on your itinerary.
2. Why visit Museo del Risorgimento?
You do not simply visit a museum here. You walk through the rooms where modern Italy was born.
In 1861 Turin was the capital of Italy, and Palazzo Carignano hosted the first Parliament of the Kingdom of Italy.
This museum sits inside the stunning Palazzo Carignano, one of the most important historic buildings in Italy which is located in the very heart of Turin city center.
The famous Baroque architect Guarino Guarini designed the palace in the 17th century. The building stands as one of the finest examples of Baroque architecture in Europe.
The palace itself already justifies the visit. Then history adds another layer. Inside Palazzo Carignano, Italy’s political future started to take shape.
3. Where is Palazzo Carignano located?

Palazzo Carignano is right in the middle of Turin’s city center. As you can see from the picture above, it sits right in between two beautiful piazzas: Piazza Carignano and Piazza Carlo Alberto.
This location already makes the museum visit special.
The palace connects this two elegant piazzas, so in order to reach the museum you will pass through some of the most refined Cafés, arcades, bookstores, and aristocratic palaces that surround the area.
What is also very captivating is that the two façades of Palazzo Carignano look different from each other.
4. Palazzo Carignano: its Two Different Faces

Before entering the museum, take a few minutes to walk around the entire palace. The exterior already becomes part of the experience.
Very few visitors stop to appreciate this detail: the two façades of Palazzo Carignano look completely different from each other.
On the Piazza Carignano side, the palace shows its true Baroque personality with its façade made of red bricks with flowing curves and movement. Few buildings in Europe look like this.
Then you walk around to Piazza Carlo Alberto’s side and the atmosphere changes completely. This façade looks more formal, symmetrical and neoclassical. This reflects the 19th -century expansion of the palace during the years connected to Italian unification.
The contrast feels striking.
It almost looks like two separate buildings joined together: the Baroque Turin on one side and the Political Italy on the other. Yet it tells an important story about Turin.
5. What is Risorgimento?
The word “Risorgimento” describes the movement that unified Italy during the 19th century.
Before unification, Italy existed as separate states and kingdoms and Turin played a central role in that transformation.
The museum tells this story through: paintings, historical documents, uniforms, weapons, sculptures, manuscripts and reconstructed historical rooms
The collections cover the period from the great revolutions of the 18th century to the years before the First World War.
6. Key figures Behind Italy’s Unification
The museum invites visitors to meet the key personalities behind Italian unification such as Re Carlo Alberto, Camillo Benso Conte di Cavour and Giuseppe Garibaldi.

Re Carlo Alberto (King of Sardinia) granted the famous Statuto Albertino in 1848 and supported the constitutional and political reforms that helped start the process of Italian unification inside Palazzo Carignano.

Camillo Benso Count of Cavour was the most important figure in Italy’s Risorgimento. He is the one that lead the political process that unified the Kingdom of Italy, transformed Italy into a liberal and constitutional state and he also became the Prime Minister.

Giuseppe Garibaldi became one of the central figures of the Risorgimento as he lead the military expedition that helped that unified Italy.
