1. Is Turin safe to visit?
The city of Turin Italy is a very safe city to visit.
As every big city you of course need to keep your eyes open and avoid careless behaviours. Yet, if you behave normally there is absolutely nothing to worry about.
2. Is Turin safe for solo female travellers?
Turin is a very safe city also for solo female travellers.
The city is home to many Universities, as such it is full of students relocating from other cities in Italy or from abroad.
It is very likely to meet young students walking freely through the cities at night. Also female students.
There are more than 110,000 University students in Turin if you consider the University of Turin (which has 80,000 a year), the Polytechnic Univer of Turin (another 30,000 students) and the Prestigious ESCP Business School (7,000 students).
There are plenty of international students in the city which come to Turin every year for Erasmus studies or for Masters degree. The overall international community is quite big.
3. Is Turin a good place to live?
Turin is an incredible beautiful city to live in.
It is a royal city. Turin was the city where the King of the House Savoy was living, it was also as the first capital of Italy, before Florence and Rome. As such, it has a lot of stunning buildins, Squares and Churches. You will see stunning Baroque architecture throughout the city center.
It is the greenest city of Italy. A total of 35% of its land consists of private or public green areas. This is well ahead of Rome, Milan and any other major city in Italy.
The Valentino Park is massive and beautiful. It sits right in the city center, just like Central Park for New York. On one side of the city center you can see the green hills which are only few hundred meters from its city center. On the other side, you will see the amazing Alps which are only 100 kms away.
The city center is tiny and gorgeous. You don’t need a car here. Everything is walking distance, you can literally cross the city center on foot and it will take you about 30-40 minutes.
You can also easily wonder around the city by bike.
The biggest river in Italy, the Po river, crosses the city offering a breath of fresh air during warm days. There are some stunning bicycle roads which go along the river for several kms.
Turin is strategically located. You have the mountains, the beach and the country-side at a one hour drive from the city center. The nearest ski resort is the Via Lattea, the nearest beach is in Savona while the UNESCO Langhe Vineyards offer a stunning country side landscape to relax.
4. Is Turin safe at night?
Yes, Turin is a safe city also at night.
Turin’s population is a bit short of one million. As such, like in every big cities there are areas which are a bit more sketchy. If you stay in the city center you will have no issues whatsoever.
5. What are the areas in Turin to be the most careful?
The areas in which one needs to be the most careful are the areas of Vallette, Falchera, Barriera di Milano and Mirafiori. These are all well outside the city center so I am quite sure you will not get anywhere close to these areas if you’re planning to visit Turin over a weekend.
Inside the city center, there are some areas that I wouldn’t classify as unsafe but in which you might need to keep your eyes open: Porta Palazzo and San Salvario
5.1 PORTA PALAZZO
Piazza della Repubblica is what us locals commonly call Porta Palazzo. Here is where the biggest Food Market of Turin is located.
This square is very close to the city center, it is only few hundred meters away from the famous Via Garibaldi, the Duomo of Turin and famous Quadrilatero neighborhood. In this area you will find also the Mercato Centrale (impressive big food court) and the Gran Balôn Market (Turin’s biggest flee market which occurs every second Sunday of the month ) which are worth a visit.
Yet, there are some really sketchy roads nearbyPorta Palazzo such as Corso Regina Margherita and Corso Giulio Cesare. So if you start wondering around and don’t pay attention you might end up in places that are somewhat unpleasant.
Although this area a is totally fine during the day, it becomes moderately risky at night.
The biggest risk you’ll face will be pick-pocketing so you might want to avoid showing off your valuables and keep your smartphone safe in the pocket.
5.2 SAN SALVARIO
San Salvario is the area nearby Torino Porta Nuova train station.
This area sits in the square created by the following four streets: Via Nizza, Via Madama Cristina, Corso Massimo d’Azeglio and Corso Vittorio Emanuele II.
This area get incredibly lively at night.
The San Salvario district is full of restaurants, cocktail bars and clubs. For dinner it is a very good choice, there are great restaurants here! My favourite in the area are Scannabue and Bottega Baretti.
After dinner, however it gets mainly populated by young people who like to party and get drunk.
It is not unlikely to see people fighting, throwing stuff at each other or simply get wasted on the streets. From March to September the side walks are packed with youngsters drinking outside the main bars.
There is a moderate risk of getting pick-pocketed hear. If you are a guy, you may be intimidated from drunk people who want to get into a fight.
If you want to avoid all kind of trouble my advice is to keep your valuables safe during dinner and avoid being in the area after 22:00.
6. What are the best & safest areas in Turin
6.1 CITY CENTER
The city center is probably the safest area to stay into, as it is always crowded and packed with tourists.
Within the city centers the best areas are the ones near Piazza Castello, Piazza San Carlo and Piazza Vittorio Veneto. The safest streets are Via Roma, Via Carlo Alberto and Via della Rocca.
6.2 GRAN MADRE
Other than the city center, a very safe & upper class area is the one of Gran Madre.
This area is opposite the Piazza Vittorio Veneto square, just after you cross the Po River.
This area is called this way as it surrounds the church called Chiesa della Gran Madre di Dio. From The church the road goes uphill as you get into the rich hilly neighbourhoods where the super wealthy people have their mansions.
This is where the Agnelli family has one of their Villas but also where some famous Juventus players lived like Gianluigi Buffon or Cristiano Ronaldo.
This area is really quiet. It is famous for the green areas & its great privacy.
6.3 CROCETTA
Crocetta is one of the wealthiest and safest areas in Turin.
This the area that surrounds the famous park called Giardini del Fante. The name comes from the fact that in Piazzale Duca d’Aosta, there is the monument Al Fante d’Italia.
The area takes its name from the popular Crocetta market. In this market you can find very good shopping deals!
The market takes place every weekend in Largo Gian Domenico Cassini Via Marco Polo Vicolo.
The famous strees that pass by Crocetta are Corso Galileo Ferraris and Corso Duca degli Abruzzi. The Crocetta area comprises all the tiny streets that cross/surround these two main streets such as Corso Alcide de Gasperi for example.
7. What are the University areas in Turin?
